About us

We (Catherine and Daniel) are Belgian citizens. We lived in many different places - Antwerp, Brussels, Paris, Geneva, Munich and London - before we took over La Fructuosa. We sailed for three years on our yacht from France to Australia. Later, we ran a bed & breakfast and an art gallery in the centre of Brussels for ten years. Now we split our time between Gaucín, Brussels and an old watermill in Provence.

Under our management, La Fructuosa has earned many industry awards and recognition from our many guests.

We are lucky to have a professional and friendly staff who play essential roles in the management of the hotel and the restaurant. They will ensure that you have a very enjoyable stay at La Fructuosa.

We speak French, Dutch, English, German and Spanish.

Catherine is a recognized artist, ceramicist, sculptor and illustrator. She has exhibited in several galleries and art shows in various countries and is a permanent member of Art Gaucín. She shares her passion for ceramics at her classes and seminars in Gaucín and in Provence.

Ecology

We (Catherine and Daniel) lived on a boat for three years so we are well aware of the importance of reducing the environmental impact of a hotel and a restaurant. We have made many structural and operational changes including a new, more efficient heating system, new windows, better insulation and solar panels for the production of hot water. We have introduced re-usable containers to replace plastic water bottles and single usage hotel toiletries.

And that is why we refuse to install air-conditioning in our hotel. Gaucín lies at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level and there is a constant breeze coming in from the Atlantic; thanks to our thick, ancient walls and beautiful wooden ceiling fans, it is always comfortable at La Fructuosa, even on the hottest summer days.

The absence of air-conditioning might cost us a star in the obsolete Spanish hotel rating system but we know that the size and the comfort of our rooms, and the quality of our service and of our food speak for themselves. The ratings given in our guest-book or online by our guests mean more to us.
